Do you answer work emails on the weekend? Are you expected to stay back late at work when you haven't exercised in weeks? Do you schedule downtime with family in your diary?
There's no right or wrong answer to these questions, but it does raise the topic of work-life balance.
It can be a challenge for some men to juggle their priorities around work, and find time for family, friends, fitness and fulfilment. It's stressful when work pulls you away from the things that are important to you.
This can be especially difficult for working Dads who want to be involved in raising their kids.
So how do you get the balance right and find the time outside of work for the things that matter? What's effective for one person may not work for everyone, here are 5 things I find helpful in maintaining control.
- Know what your priority's are, and what you are working towards
- Manage yourself and your time well
- Diarise exercise and family time
- Make the most of weekends, and holidays
- Evaluate and adjust as circumstances change
The 'Wheel of Life' is another helpful tool for work life balance. It gives a visual representation of the focus you are placing on key life areas such as your partner, parents, friends, finances, health career and community. These life priorities are like spokes on the wheel where you give yourself a score. Importantly, it helps you identify which area need more energy devoted to them.
